A World We Dare to Imagine

I feel like we live in a very difficult period where the fear of terrorism is making us insane. The threat is even bigger than the 9/11 tragedy. Terrorism has reached a global scale unlike in the past. Brussels, Jakarta, and Paris were the last three major cities being attacked. No where in the world is safe enough.

What's even scarier is that social media has become a platform for terrorists to communicate to public and to recruit new members. At the end of the day, we are the ones who develop technology. We develop the Internet, various social media, and weapons at the same time.

Thus, my ultimate questions are: Are we becoming so advanced that we create our own enemies? Where's the humanity?

  1. Terrorism is definitely one of the biggest threat of human being today. Sometimes it is about religion, or other political reasons. I think education might be the solution for it that if everyone is educated enough, then no ignorant participants will attend any of these self destructive activities.

  2. Amanda, it is unfortunate how the world we live in still faces terrorism, and how humanity could not find a permanent solution to terrorism. Social media is being used by the majority of people, and there is still no way to stop terrorists using social media to execute their plans. I believe that the next step would be to discuss with any government officials what can be done to stop this treat and hopefully find a solution in the near future.

  3. Sad reality indeed Amanda, development comes with inevitable threats. We are slaves of our creation. Some people take advantage of the freedom granted by greatest nations to commit hideous acts. Nowhere is safe, we should allow our different governments to protect us by any means even if we have to sacrifice a little bit of our privacy. I don't want to sound "un-American" but we need to let the government monitor social media. A petition could be a great start to require the security we deserve.

  4. Wow, I have always been aware of being the "slaves of our creation," but I have never thought of social media in a negative light. In fact, I delivered a TED talk about how social media actually propelled the upheavals in Libya and Egypt. I think if you provide specific examples of terrorists using social media, that would make your idea much more concrete
